Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kensington Maryland welcomed the Guild on June 22, 2023 for our Memorial Mass of the 19th anniversary of Mattie’s death, and the Guild was honored to have Msgr. John J. Enzler back to celebrate the Mass and offer his homily.

2022 Memorial Mass for 18th Anniversary of Mattie’s Death at St. Rose of Lima Parish, Gaithersburg Maryland
Fr. Mateo offered a deeply felt homily sharing how he ‘met’ Mattie through Mattie’s writings. “His message sounds in my heart – his Heartsong – is just that: we have direction, we have purpose, we know – we are here – what for, why were we created … Mattie, as young as he was, he accepted his call for holiness.”
2021 Memorial Mass Marking the 17th Anniversary of Mattie’s Death
Mattie talked with God about his purpose. And Mattie shared God’s messages to the world. But Jesus was his role model. Through the Eucharist we see the gift of Jesus – we see the thank you to our Father. We also see the Amen – the YES – that Jesus gave our Father.

Maybe Elise Heil, the principal of Sacred Heart School in Washington, D.C., always was destined to be an educator.
Her mom, Donna Heil, noted, “As a child, she’d line up her stuffed animals in the hallway and teach them. She was always going to be a teacher.”

The Mass – celebrated on the Feast of St. Matthew which is also the International Day of Peace as proclaimed by the United Nations – was not only offered to remember Stepanek, but also to inaugurate the new school year at Sacred Heart School. St. Matthew was Stepanek’s patron saint.
